Just finished writing a new song

October 21, 2009 at 3:37 pm (Uncategorized)

I thought for once I would share the lyrics in my blog before anyone hears it. If you’re fortunate enough to read my blog then this is a treat just for you. This song is called ‘Friendly Fire’

The battle lines are drawn

Who’s side are you on

It weathers through the night

They can’t wait till light

When will you see

That shooting at your enemy

Is like friendly fire

When will you know

That standing on your own two feet

Is gonna bring you down

Will you lend a hand

Can I call you friend

The battle wages on

You shouldn’t be alone

You pray that they are wrong

And they always sing along

The ammunition’s scarce

And you don’t know if you can hold on

They say that you can run but you will never hide
You won’t survive

Sitting in starbucks

October 8, 2009 at 4:08 pm (Uncategorized)

IMG00247Well is it really starbucks? It’s attached to the UNCG book store which is in some way Barnes and Noble. You know, I usually come to this starbucks during my breaks between class either to work on school work or just take a breather but I still haven’t bought anything. It is fun to people watch though. Humans are so weird when by themselves. One pretty cool thing that I’ve started to notice is that more and more professors are meeting their students here to discuss papers and assignments. Why don’t I ever get professors like this? Well, actually I lied. I had one professor that met students at this coffee place (whatever you want to call it) back when it was called Port City Java…or Charlies? But they didn’t meet me in the coffee shop, We sat out side in the the hall area. IT’S NOT THE SAME! I’m just kidding but back to my point. These professors deserve recognition for this type of work. In all reality, a professor doesn’t have to go out of his/her way to work with students one on one. How many professors just list their office hours on the sylybus and call it a day?

I digress. I started browsing around wordpress and noticed  haven’t writen in a while. I thought it would be great to touch on a few points, bullet style!

> I just got a new guitar! A taylor 410ce
> I am selling my eletric guitar as well a guitar amp
> Working on writing more music
> attempting to find venues to play at
> pushing to start recording
> working on finding a balance for worship music selection for the Patio
> going to Mike Astuto’s bachlor party on Thursday
> Attending the WFU vs. Maryland football game this Saturday
> Fall break is next Monday and Tuesday
> Finishing school work.
> ready for a tough team in fantasy football this week. Go cheese heads!

I think I’ll call it a day with all of that. Theres more to do but I’ll save it for more daylight.

So. I want a Kindle DX

June 24, 2009 at 6:16 pm (tech) (, , , , , , )

ok ok before you bash me, let me explain.

First things first. Let me explain what a kindle is to all those not-so-tech-savvy types. The Kindle (better referred to as “The Amazon Kindle”) is a wireless reading device. It’s a small thin device designed and produced by amazon.com. This electronic device can store over 1,000 books as well as present pdf files and other supported files. The kindle uses a unique paper-like screen that allows you to read for hours without straining or drying out your eyes. If you didn’t already know this, you’re behind because Amazon already has a newer, bigger model out. Get the full scoop here.

That said, I think the uses as a worship leader are endless for this device. Being able to carry all of my sheet music on one device would be awesome in itself. Never having to print out lyrics or chords would be huge considering the amount of music we sing as a church. Not to mention having to carry all of that printed music to practice and to church. No more ripped pages that need reprinting and no more buying ink or paper. I might would use the device for books but the biggest use I can see is the ability to upload documents. Plus, the latest DX model is almost twice as large than the previous kindle which would make reading off of a stand easier. If it weren’t for the price, I would already own this thing.

wordpress pointer

June 12, 2009 at 6:40 pm (Tips and tricks)

So I must be behind when it comes to managing a blog but today I learned how to use wordpress’ category and tagging feature. If you didn’t know, you have the ability to categorize your blog entries(I believe Mike already does this). This allows others to filter your blog posts if they are looking for a specific topic or entry. You can also use multiple tags to make it easier for people to search for your blogs by way of a search engine. These two features also allows wordpress to suggest other entries you have written that may be relative to the original topic.

I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir but I thought it might be something useful if you didn’t already know.

admiting defeat

June 2, 2009 at 3:59 am (Uncategorized)

You ever have those moments where you’ve done all you can and you feel like you’re at the end of your rope? You keep trying to make things work but everything just somehow goes wrong. I feel like for the first time in my life, I had to admit defeat.

Saturday 5/30/09:
I started my morning early heading from Aberdeen NC to Charleston SC. A three and a half hour drive was under way and we had to start moving early if we wanted to make good time. You see, Nikki and I had been planning this day for over a month. We were going to drive down to Charleston in order to pick up a varied mix of furniture to take back to Aberdeen. But of most importance was a custom made bar, designed and built by Nikki’s father who passed away when she was in high school. We were taking this special piece to Greensboro NC. I remember the bar quite well. It used to sit in a garage at her parents house in Aberdeen. It was accompanied by a pool table and a dart board. there was also a fridge and an a/c unit to keep things cool in the summer. I used to have so much fun visiting Nikki in high school. Playing pool, throwing darts, and sitting at the bar seemed to never end. I digress. The bar had a lot of sentimental value, along with the pool table and the custom overhanging lights. Nikki already had inherited the pool table and lights years ago. You see, Nikki’s mother was moving in with her boyfriend and had a lot of furniture she would not be able to keep or store. This included a full bedroom suite, bar stools, and of course, the bar. Long story short, the bar was going to make its way to a yard sale if we didn’t pick it up. The turn of events were not all that bad considering me and David were losing a roommate along with a kitchen table in our apartment. Nikki wouldn’t have had a place to store the bar even if she wanted it so I offered to store it for her. The arrangements were to pick up the bar, drive it to Greensboro, and use it as a table in the apartment. May sound easy but were talking about an L-shaped bar weighing in at around 400-500 pounds, over 6 feet one direction and 4 and a half the other.
Well we got everything loaded once we were in Charleston, grabbed some lunch, and headed back to Aberdeen. Unloading a full bedroom suite wasn’t too bad compared to what lied ahead. It was around 6pm when we decided to make the trek to Greensboro. When we got there, we were accompanied by Joe, David, and Greg. About a quarter to 8pm we started an adventure of lifting this gigantic bar up three narrow flights of steps. We pushed, pulled, and lifted the bar up those stairs. The stairs were barley wide enough to allow the bar to pass through so we had to man handle the thing around the bends of the staircase and take frequent breaks to plan how to flip, spin, slide, and maneuver it. About two and a half hours later, the bar finally was wedged into the door frame. Whew….what a relief…or was it.
No amount of measuring or educated guess work could have prepared us for what happened next. The bar wouldn’t fit through the door. The side wall leading up the staircase wouldn’t allow us to turn the bar sharp enough to get it through the door. Half in and half out sat the bar at the top of the stairs. We did everything we could. We tilted and rocked and shoved, but we couldn’t make up for a foot of wood that was keeping us from getting the corner of the bar through the door frame. My heart sank. I tried not to show it but I was disappointed. I didn’t care if we got to use the bar or not. I had done all of this planning, and all of this work to no avail. And I knew we were going to have to take the bar back down. We even thought we could take the bar apart but it turns out that we couldn’t do so with the tools or time that we had. We took in a vote and carried the bar back down the stairs, reversing the work we had just done. There was a cry of happiness as the bar reached the ground once again but it wasn’t enough to cover how I really felt. I stood there in front of my parents in the saddest state I have been in a long time. I felt like I had let everyone down and wasted every ones time, including mine. I apologized to my parents for the time and money they spent to help me with all of this. I could barely hold myself together. My parents left, Joe left, and David and Greg went upstairs. As I walked over to Nikki, I completely lost it. I’m a tough guy but I cried when we were alone. I knew that there was nothing that I could do or say to make up for the time and effort spent on this project. There was no redemption that I could create.

Sometimes I think our relationship with God is like this. We try so very hard to conquer sin on our own. We try everything in the rule book and we are left in the same state that we were in when we began to fight. We feel hopeless and shamefull. We think that there is no saving grace for the work we have comitted. We are at the end of our rope and we want to give up. Please listen and understand that there is a God that can conquer all. Unlike my wrestling with this situation, Our God is capable, ready, and willing to fight and win for us. With God, there is victory. There is no defeat. There is no bar wedged between a door frame and a wall. There is nothing that He cannot personally handle. He is 100% capable and then some. I tell you this so that you do not lose faith. So that you do not lose hope. May God stay with you all of your days and throughout eternity.

Phil Wickham Singalong

May 1, 2009 at 8:29 pm (Uncategorized)

I don’t normally recommend CD’s so take this as a special privilege.

I’ve probably told you once so here is your opportunity again. Go download the new CD from Phil Wickham called singalong. It’s completely free! How can you beat free? You can’t so go get it.

No, really. This CD blew me out of the water. I was quite impressed with the previous release, Cannon’s, but I think I’ve enjoy this one even more. So this CD contains Phil leading worship with just his guitar for what sounds like a rather large congregation. May not seem like your cup of tea but I would say that this is one of the best worship CDs I have picked up in awhile. From the song selection right down to the transitions, this CD creates a worship filled atmosphere no matter where you are.  head over to www.philwickham.com (or click the image below) and tell me what you think. If you don’t like it, it didn’t cost you anything.

Ciao,

Chris
